The Graphene Supercapacitor

February 24, 2013
By

Thanks, Georgehants for posting about an interesting video which discusses using graphene as a supercapacitor. Graphene is something I am hearing a lot about about these days — a material made of pure carbon in sheets only one atom thick — that is considered by many to be a miracle material that may transform the technology of the future. It has the ability to conduct electricity and heat extremely efficiently, and it is also one of the strongest materials known.

The video features the work of a team led by UCLA Chemistry professor Ric Kaner who developed an inexpensive way to create graphene superconductors using consumer electronics devices.

Here’s a short video by Dr. Jonathan Hare of the University of Sussex, providing an introduction to graphene.

It seems to me that graphene could be another one of the ingredients, along with other things that we discuss here, that will go into technologies that will help transform our world.

Lots of people using graphene sheets as a substrate to build cheap catalysts. Here is just one of many new applications of graphene to build catalysts using far less expensive materials, i.e. cobalt to replace Platinum in H2 fuel cells: http://news.brown.edu/pressreleases/2012/10/catalyst

yes georgehants.the quantumworld extending to the maxwellian demon world and the 2nd law thermodynamics.who wouldve thought that a maxwell demon can do its thing passively? Times are changing exponentialy fast

buffalo, afraid I do not understand your point please explain more fully.
      Thank you.

George, it is pointless to expect anything positive from a tro11.

Ha, I like to give them a chance to convince me.

its an extension of your point sir.plz google the words maxwell demon and quantum for detailed explanation

Many Wonderful effects and phenomenon being found in the Quantum World, now that in that area, because of the fear of the Quantum computer breaking all known classical codes it has become fashionable, after 60 years of denial and debunking.
It is where Cold Fusion will be explained and everything else including the esoteric connected to the known Quantum effects of the Mind on things at that level.
A small part of science that is awake and searching rather than burying it’s head in the sand.
Some brilliant scientists may even begin to wonder what lies behind the Quantum, if they where allowed to actually think freely.
Most I think believe they will find their holy grail of a giant steam engine running everything, that of course appeared quite by chance in a true Darwinian manner.

Macquarie says rooftop solar juggernaut is unstoppable
By Giles Parkinson on 12 February 2013
The fundamental transformation of energy markets brought about by the
growing incursions of renewables such as wind and solar has been
underlined in a new report by the European energy analysts at Macquarie
Group, who have concluded that the plunge in costs for rooftop solar PV
has fallen to such an extent that its continued rapid deployment may be
    unstoppable.

Macquarie goes as far as to say that the German energy market is
“kaput”. “Without radical overhaul, we conclude the German power system
      is structurally broken,” they say.”

Coming from Aussies this is a fairly optimistic view of domestic residential PV for Australia. That is a very sunny place and PV will work reasonably. But Australia is fighting the brown coal lobby which is cheaper than natural gas. Some nat gas generation plants are being replaced with brown coal.

And there still remains the pesky problem for wind and solar of intermittent energy. Without expensive storage systems, neither provide base load for a grid. But there is little doubt that PV in northern Australia will grow and once someone invents non-volatile, low, low cost storage – (graphene supercaps?) the problem of “lights out” at night might disappear.

lol.wait till these people see the ‘supercapacitor’ i have here in front of me.it charges itself.no input energy required.the 2nd law thermodynamics is null and void under certain circumstances

    • iopo on February 24, 2013 at 10:27 am

It’s an empty bottle of wine, I guess.

      • buffalo on February 25, 2013 at 10:19 am

        i disagree mr iopo

Wonderful to see so many people showing their alternative energy cards. Who could’ve stirred this pot??
